New on DVD: Christianity Today Movie Review: Law Abiding Citizen

lawabidingcitizen-3.jpgCan you imagine a major Hollywood studio releasing a movie that is blatantly, unashamedly pro-terrorism? Of course not; for obvious reasons, terrorism is not something that any rational person would ever condone, and to make a movie that supports it would be, if nothing else, financial suicide. But that's essentially what we have with Law Abiding Citizen. It may not put a smiley face on the Taliban, yet its plot centers around a violent genius who brutally kills innocent people as a way of enacting revenge on a government with which he has grievances. And though it's not entirely clear, I think the movie actually wants us to sympathize with the guy.

Christianity Today Movie Review: Valentine's Day

Just the mention of it is likely to elicit squeals or groans--strong emotions that the makers of Valentine's Day the movie were no doubt trying to tap into with their star-studded opus to the charged day. When it comes to pre-teen/teen fantasy, the Harry Potter universe is a rare treat of relatable characters, emotional storytelling, exciting adventures, and fairly complex ruminations about life, death and growing up. It's a full feast.

In comparison, the new film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is sort of like macaroni & cheese. And honestly, who doesn't like macaroni & cheese? It's tasty. But nutritional, decadent, rich, satisfying, and lasting? Maybe not so much. While this new flick may not have Potter's complex world, deeper themes, and multiple layers, it also doesn't have the angst, heaviness and darkness. Instead, it replaces them with one thing in bulk: Fun.

The werewolf gets no respect.

Everyone knows Bela Lugosi's Dracula and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein's monster, even if they haven't seen the movies, but hardly anyone really knows Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolf Man. Vampires are everywhere nowadays, often in risible incarnations, but we can still take them seriously, while werewolves seem inherently semi-comic. Howling at the moon inspires smiles rather than chills.

TheTimeTravelersWife.jpg
I've never had much of a desire to travel through time. Let's just let the past, with all its mistakes and bad haircuts, stay in the past, I've always thought. Until now. As the ending credits of The Time Traveler's Wife were rolling, I had a sudden urge to slip back a year or so to tell the film's screenwriter and director that the fruit of their labor was going to frustrate audiences nationwide if they didn't add a few more scenes early on.

But, sadly, no.

Plugged In Movie Review: Dear John

dear-john-movie-poster_a.jpg
No one would call Special Forces Sgt. John Tyree verbose. And the taciturn soldier is especially tongue-tied after meeting young and gentle Savannah Lynn Curtis on a South Carolina beach. Bumbling through his crush on the girl of his dreams, John asks her out. And over the brief course of his two-week leave, the couple falls in love.

When they must part ways--Savannah going back to college and John back to combat--they vow their affection and promise to write. Savannah makes him swear to "write everything."

Plugged In Movie Review: From Paris With Love

from-paris-with-love-poster.jpg
If super-secret spy agencies took out want ads, their copy would probably emphasize a few critical elements of the job: the qualifications, the likelihood of travel, the 401(k) plan. And it would certainly mention the job's most self-evident requirement: That being a secret agent means doing lots of work in secret.

James Reece gets that. The hyper-efficient diplomatic assistant spies in his spare time--swapping out license plates, sticking bugs in embassies, that sort of thing. By definition, it's thankless work--not the sort of stuff that earns him "employee of the month" awards. But, then again, public accolades for spying sort of defeats the purpose, no?

The other word she liked was "vagabonding." As imagined in Amelia, Mira Nair's handsome biopic, Earhart craves freedom above all: "no borders, only horizons."
