What do we do with death? And especially when someone's passing is tragic, premature and violent? That's the central question in Remember Me, an intense drama about two families struggling with heartrending losses.
The first tragedy involves an 11-year-old girl and her doting mother. As the pair waits for the subway in Brooklyn, two hoodlums take Mom's purse. And though she surrenders it without a struggle, they take her life, too, gunning her down in front of her daughter.
Reviewing the Rob Marshall film Memoirs of a Geisha, Roger Ebert wrote, "I suspect that the more you know about Japan and movies, the less you will enjoy Memoirs of a Geisha." This is such a useful critical rule of thumb that there ought to be a shorthand way of referring to movies fitting that description. I don't suppose we can call them Geisha movies. No, probably not.

If you find a steady diet of Hollywood a little bland, here is a recipe for something completely different. In the mid-1990s, Emmerich threw down the gauntlet with the planetary disaster-action spectacle Independence Day, in its day a ranking contender for most the staggeringly overproduced B-movie to date. Two years later, Bay arguably upped the ante with the similarly overproduced planetary disaster-action spectacle Armageddon.
In the films of Hayao Miyazaki, children often see things that the adults around them miss completely. It's not that Miyazaki's grown-ups have impaired vision, and it's certainly not that they're dim. It's just that they can sometimes be so caught up in the hustle and bustle of busy, everyday life that they forget how to really look.
In much the same way, moviegoers who are too caught up in looking for the latest, newest, shiniest, flashiest blockbuster or Oscar warhorse are likely to miss out on Miyazaki's cinematic miracles--movies that require a slightly different kind of viewing, moviegoing informed by patience and imagination and childlike wonder.
